WHA Drama Department recently had the incredible opportunity to take a group of Year 7 and 8 students on a backstage tour of the Birmingham Rep Theatre, and I must say it was a truly eye-opening experience. The tour allowed the students to witness first-hand the inner workings of a real working theatre, providing them with a unique and invaluable opportunity to explore the magic that happens behind the scenes.

The backstage tour allowed the students to see the various departments and roles involved in bringing a production to life, from set design, make up, costume design and construction to lighting and sound.

As we walked through the corridors and explored the different workshops, the students were able to witness the craftsmanship and dedication that goes into every aspect of a production.

Furthermore, the tour provided the students with a deeper understanding of their own experiences as audience members. They were able to see first-hand how every element, from the lighting and sound effects to the set design and costumes, contributes to the overall theatrical experience.

They witnessed the teamwork and coordination required amongst the different departments to ensure a successful production. This experience emphasised the importance of effective communication, problem-solving, and adaptability – transferable skills that are not only crucial in the context of theatre but also in their everyday lives and personal development.

Overall, the backstage tour of the Birmingham Rep Theatre was a truly remarkable and enriching experience for the Year 7 and 8 students. It provided them with a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a real working theatre, igniting their creativity, enhancing their understanding of theatre as an art form, and emphasising the importance of collaborative skills. This opportunity will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the students, inspiring them to explore their own creative potential and encouraging them to become active participants in the world of theatre.

It was an incredible day, and the student’s behaviour was outstanding.
